Student Rotarians

My name is Cal Porter. My parents’ names are Kerry and Jennifer Porter. I have one sibling, and her name is Libby. My sister is freshman this year. I participate in football, basketball, and baseball, all at the varsity level. In school I participate in the Link Crew, NHS, and the Capitol Conference Athletic Team. I have a job at AKT business services, a tax credit accounting firm in Lake Mills. In my free time I enjoy spending time with my friends and family.
As I mentioned before I participate in three sports. I have played those sports every year of high school, and I plan on continuing to play those sports this year. This year I am a captain on the football team. In my freshman year, I was involved in Student Council where I was the Vice-President for the class. I have also been involved in the Junior Optimist club during my freshman and sophomore year. Last year I was inducted into the National Honor Society. Near the end of the year, I was elected to the office of Vice-President for the club. This year I am a manager of our school store, The Paw. My sophomore and junior year I have been a part of the Capitol Conference Academic Team, which I also plan to be a part of this year. My sophomore year, I was on the math team, where I took first place in our conference. This past summer, I attended Badger Boys State, where I learned invaluable lessons from experienced counselors and over 800 of my peers for a week long, life-changing experience.
I participate in multiple community service activities. I help regularly with the youth football teams, whether at their practices, or during their games helping everything run smoothly. As a part of the NHS, we have multiple events every year that help the community. Last year I participated in the operation of the annual blood drive, and raised money for the polar plunge, which benefited the Special Olympics.
After high school, I plan on attending either the University of Wisconsin- Madison or the University of Texas at Austin. My plan is to enter into a business major, specifically accounting. I have always been interested in attending Wisconsin because it is the school I have grown up around. More recently, my interest has been peaked by the University of Texas. I went there for a tour last May, and I was instantly in love with the city and the school. I was only there for a weekend, however it was a place that I could see myself living. Both Universities have very respectable business programs and they both have great job placement upon graduation. I would love to work as an accountant after I graduate college.
I think that being a Student Rotarian would mean a lot to me. I would like to participate in this because it could help open my eyes to another side of the Lake Mills community, and I could learn more about what the Rotary does. I love the city of Lake Mills, and I would like to help give back as much as possible. I believe that being a Student Rotarian would be a great opportunity for me to do that.

My name is Sarah Nelson. My parents are Marc and Katherine Nelson. I have a brother, Brian Nelson who is going to be junior at the University of Arizona. I thoroughly enjoy keeping myself busy, whether that means spending time with family and friends or playing sports and staying active. I love being at the beach and on the lake during the summertime and relaxing and reading in the winter.
During my career at Lake Mills High School, I have been involved in many different activities and served in a number of leadership roles. To begin, I played volleyball for three years in high school, playing two of those years on varsity. Then I found cross country was what I truly enjoyed and joined my senior year. I also am involved in Track and Field and have competed on varsity all three years of high school and plan to continue competing this coming year.
Outside of sports, I have been very involved in many clubs my school has offered. My senior year I will have the honor of being a Link Crew Leader, helping kids transition to high school. This will also be my second year as part of the Interact Club where I will be on the officer team as a higher officer. I will also be serving my second consecutive year as a member of National Honors Society this upcoming year. I have volunteered with Octagon Club for the past three years and will continue this next year. This will also be my third year participating in Elm Club, where we help to preserve our environment.
Partaking in so many clubs has given me many great opportunities to help others in the community. Through Octagon Club, I have had the pleasure to help with gift wrapping at the Moravian Church and the Knickerbocker Festival for the past three years. I’ve taken an active role with Elm Club the past two years and helped with many roadside cleanups. This past year I helped, through National Honors Society, with the blood drive at our school and Secret Santa for families in need.
The past three years, I’ve volunteered at many local middle school track meets where I help with logistics, set up, and time. I’ve also assisted and mentored middle school students who were in track clinic.
Throughout the last three years at Lake Mills High School, I have pursued my interest with business. I was chosen to participate in the JA Titan business challenge where I competed with other business minded students in a business simulation competition. I also attended Business World this past summer, spending 4 days at Edgewood College learning about business studies. I will also have the honor of being a manager of our school store, The Paw, this coming year.
Outside of Lake Mills High School, I have had the pleasure of helping with Wisconsin High School Cycling League as the Merchandise Manager to advance my knowledge of business. The past three years as the Merchandise Manager, I have helped with designing pieces, ordering merchandise, overseeing inventory, and selling products.
After graduating high school I plan to attend college in a business related major. As of right now my goal is to attend University of Wisconsin-Madison. This university has a top ranked business program and that is why my dream would to be directly admitted into the business school at University of Wisconsin-Madison as a freshman. I have been working very hard at making that dream possible with applying myself as a driven business student during my time at Lake Mills High School.
There are many reasons I would be honored to be selected as a Student Rotarian. To be a Student Rotarian would be a great opportunity to get more involved with the Lake Mills community and continue to learn more about business. As I’m beginning my step towards a career in business I would be honored to have the privilege of becoming more connected with the Lake Mills Business community.
