Today’s Program
Matt loves talking about birds and what the Audubon Society does! The Madison Audubon Society is a bird conservation organization. They are in 10 counties including Jefferson County. They started as a bird club, but now do advocacy, education, and land protection. Everyone at least has a bird story, even if you don’t like birds very much! Whether it be being attacked by a red wing blackbird or seeing an eagle swoop.

They do a lot of advocacy work as far as protecting sandhill cranes, ordinances that protect birds, and education to communities.
Most people really enjoy birds.

Why do they care? Birds matter and have incredible value. Bird watching is a huge industry. During the pandemic bird watching was crazy. Birds also do so much for the ecosystem. Control insects, agricultural pests, pollination, and nutrient recycling. They make our lives better.

There are a lot of ways that birds are threatened as well. Climate change, disease, window strikes. Eventually, with climate change, birds will move north.

Habitat Restoration is the main thing that they do. Goose Pond Sanctuary is one of theirs that is right down the road. They have built a flourishing habitat for birds! If you want to help plant a prairie, reach out they are always looking for volunteers. They have interns that are gaining experience pulling invasive species and eventually will become ecologists.

Monarch tagging is happening soon. Sign up to catch butterflies and tag them with the Madison Audobon.

They provide educational classes at local schools to get kids outside. They pull invasive species, bird watching, and catch bugs. There are so many benefits to this! They also do evening lecture series at colleges to educate on nesting, birds, and advocacy.

Thank you to everyone! They are a nonprofit, so they appreciate all involvement. Birds are awesome.
