Happy Bucks and Fines

  • Beth: Beth is selling the raffle tickets for the cooler that will be auctioned away for Garden Walk that supports the Friends of the FD Fargo Library.

  • Greg: Greg spent a week in Destin Florida with all of his children and grandchildren. It went very well! Him and his wife returned home for 5 days and then traveled to Paris after some travel trouble. They had a blast site-seeing. They spent time in Paris and then took a river cruise where they ended up at the beaches of Normandy which was incredibly moving.

  • Tara: Don’t forget to get your colonoscopy! Her “other mother” got the procedure done and found a tumor that needed to be removed. The surgery went very well. Another happy buck was that there was a hang-up with their new building as far as electricity goes, but they received their electricity box which will keep things moving along. Additionally, their old 76 sign is going back up today. Lastly, Mick Selck is in Maine and is having a great time. Her daughter, who goes to school in Maine, gave him tips as to what!

  • Karen – The building that Karen has her practice in has sold, so Karen is having to move her practice! She is currently working out the details, but things are going smoothly.

  • Andy- Andy taught his 5-year-old daughter how to ski over the weekend and it was a blast.

  • Raina – The networking event to meet the top 4 candidates for the City Manager Position went very very well on Friday. The candidates are all qualified and she heard great feedback from the community. Additionally, the Art Festival is on Saturday. Stop down from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm if you have time!

PROGRAM: Friends of the LD Fargo Library

  • Vicki A. Wickliffe, President of the Friends of the LD Fargo Library
    • Vicki started the presentation by stating she just hoped something was learned about the Friends of the LD Fargo Library Program. Vicki is the current President of the program. It is a volunteer organization founded in 1987 the mission is to provide support services to the library staff and board and promote community life. They do this by helping to provide services that would not be possible without them, fundraisers, etc. The board meets monthly. There is individual membership as well as corporate memberships. They are always recruiting new members!

  • Membership and Membership Dues
    • Many of their members of seniors who are not too involved but provide their membership dues. Most board and volunteers do work. In 2017 they started a campaign to attract corporate friends. The first year they implemented this program they gained over 20 members then it grew to 33. Since the COVID Pandemic, they have not received corporate sponsors, but they hope to start it up again in the year 2023.
    • Annual meetings are potlucks and at these meetings are annual reports to show members how their dues are helping the community. By the end of the year dues really make an impression on the program.

  • Accomplishments
    • They donated $40,000 to the renovation of the LD Fargo Library.
    •  For the last 5 years, they have funded reading programs. The adult summer reading program led to the donation of $1,600 to the adult literacy council in Jefferson County. During the past 5 years, they have donated money to kids’ programs. Most notably was the “Read, Rhythm, and Rhyme” Class. It was a spectacular program with such an impact on little ones! They hope this program will return.
    • They spend money on author visits and speakers.
    • They also provided funding to the new story walk that is located at Wallace Park.
    • They also purchased library items such as chairs, and holiday decorations, and provide candy during witch’s night out.
    • The stained-glass window was funded by used book sales where $32,000 was raised. A local artist was paid to frame the stained-glass window. Go check it out if you have not seen it.
    • They also award scholarships! Their first scholarship was $500 and was given to a student who was going into a career in literacy. Since 2011 they have given over $9000 in scholarships.

  • Fundraising
    • Prior to 2009, the Friends of the Library hosted the Tour of Homes. They have since passed it on to the Rock Lake Activity Center
    • Used books are available for sale at both the library and the Lake Mills Market – Coffee Van Gogh Café. Please make sure to stop and purchase books!
    • This weekend is the Third Annual Garden tour. There are colorful rainboots at each location to take donations. Each garden is different. There are two in town and two in Shorewood hills. As Beth has stated, in conjunction with the garden Tour. There is a raffle for a Seljan Company rolling cooler.
    •  They also sell postcards that are of Lake Mills photos. They are for sale at the library, Wallflower Market, The Corner Mercantile, and Daydream Believer Books.
    • They have a Pie Day Sale twice a year from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm. Last time they sold out within 2 hours. There will be another sale this year in November so make sure to keep your eyes open.
