Technology in transportation is rapidly evolving and the groundwork is being laid for autonomous car travel.
Currently there are 100 million lines of code in our cars and many sensors. Self driving cars will need around one billion lines of code.
The data right now is being used for safety, infotainment, and maintenance. For example, blind spot detection
The sensors can currently detect things like weight, passengers, eye movement, texting while driving. When you connect your phone to the infotainment center, the car manufacturer has all of your phone data including texts and emails.
Currently, there are not many laws that protect our personal data through our vehicles. The manufacturer owns the data that they collect, not the driver. It is also difficult for vehicle repair shops to access diagnostic data. You cant see it even if you wanted to.
