- Board Meeting Updates: Mick attending parks board this week to discuss the dean sanders memorial project. There are a few more fundraising efforts coming up. A possible timeline could be installation in October. Or it may go into next spring. The sign at wallace park has some outdated information on it regarding meeting locations so we are looking at updating that. The sign south of town is our responsibility to maintain, not the township, so we are looking at updating that sign to make it look better. The new constitution was signed by the board. New member packets are being updated. Mick will be meeting with Brian and handing over a manual he created to help inform future presidents.
- We watched a video of Mick's presentation of the rotary scholarship
- Upcoming programs: Rotary awards, installation of new board
PROGRAM
Sarah Weihert, Managing Editor of the Lake Mills Leader. She has been in this position since 2018. He has a history in journalism prior, including work at WFAW, Magic 98, and WSJY radio shows. Sarah and her family are members of the Lake Mills community themselves.
They cover local events, breaking news, showcase papers, upcoming events, and more. The paper comes out every tuesday, but online content goes up regularly. Sarah is the only writer, editor, and photographer.
The Leader was founded in 1878 and has been publishing for 142 years.
The amount of advertising in a paper determines the length of the paper. Sarah is told how long it needs to be, so it is a puzzle every week to make things fit. They can also get last minute news stories that needs to be included, causing everything to need to shuffle.
When the paper is finished, it is printed at a plant in Janesville along with the Janesville Gazette. It is delivered to the post office on Wednesday mornings and out to the community on Thursdays.
One of her favorite parts of working for a paper is meeting new and interesting people. Photography is another fun and interesting part of her job. Finding photos to include in the paper every single week can be a challenge.
A tough aspect of her job is covering controversial or heated topics that involve the community.
Sarah loves to write and is thrilled by reporting on breaking news, especially if she can cover it before the larger Madison or Milwaukee media outlets.
Supporting your local newspaper is the only way to have local events, organizations, and breaking news covered in one place.
Meeting adjourned 1:00pm
