Dan Sanft’s Guest--Jen Korz Heartland Farm Sanctuary

Jen Heartland Farm Sanctuary

Jen is giving us a glimpse at the heart of Heartland Farm Sanctuary. At Heartland they believe in compassion, and act as a restorative space where animals, people, and the earth gather to restore, transform, and

Heartland was founded in 2009 by a passionate animal rescuer. They Heartland Farm Sanctuary started with two rescue goats. When the organization started, there was no heat or running water. They began growing.

Their three main programs are farm rescue, care, and compassionate learning. They are the first farm sanctuary and have 13 different species. A sanctuary for the animals is a place for them to live happily and comfortably for the rest of their lives. They are treated with love, kindness, and understanding. They have a comfortable place to live, veterinary care, and eat. These animals come from hobby farms, house pets, or abandoned.

Farm Sanctuarties are different from Petting Zoos. Petting Zoos are for-profit and does not have a focus on the comfortably of the animals. When visiting the animals, people are visiting the animals’ home. Boundaries the animals  set and understood and respected.

Heartland is all about compassionate learning. They educate through camps, classes, visits, and more. They work towards teaching compassion and understanding with rescued animals, moving towards a more patient and compassionate future.

Camps that they have include hiking, games, nature classes, food preparation for animals, and more. Another opportunity they have is educational therapy. This is working with animals and it teaches many life skills such as patience, understanding, compassion, and confidence. Community Engagement is a focus of Heartland. They offer tours on Saturdays and throughout the week. Stop in and visit to see what they all have to offer.

Heartland has grown quite a lot over the past couple of years.

How to get involved?
  • Come visit! They are just about half an hour away.
  • Schedule a private tour or take advantage of public tours.
  • Volunteer with them. There are plenty of opportunities: event planning, social media, and more.
