Day Meeting Minutes - 3/2/21 (Mar 02, 2021)

Mick opened the meeting at the Pyramid Event Venue at 12:15pm and led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance followed with the Four-Way Test.

Gerard - Worked hard to not embarass his son last month when he was a student rotarian. however he is very happy and proud of his accomplishments.
Jenn C - Girls LCat basketball win. Welcome Kayla, student rotarian and member of that team
Ken S - 3: Girls for winning state, hopefully boys this coming week, and for Quentin Saylor for the national merit scholarship. 1.6 million applicants are received but only 1,600 or so are selected and two were from lake mills
Mick S - 20.5 years of service from Doug Messman in law enforcement. Mick just started his 28th year at Lake Mills PD

PROGRAM

Lynn Forseth - Jefferson Co Literacy Council

Jefferson Co Literacy Council has its 20th anniversary this year. Their mission is to help learners defeat their personal literacy challenges, whether it is reading, computer use, or specific needs like getting their drivers license

They provide instruction by trained volunteer tutors or paid instructors. They deliver services in eight communities and the jail to up to 200 residents per year

Due to covid, the group could not meet at local libraries which is where they had been holding their sessions. Like others, they switched to an online instruction model using zoom.

A large challenge was providing services to jail inmates, since in person visits were prohibited due to covid. They created a multi media cabinet to provide zoom connections to inmates.

Our rotary club has donated over $19,000 to the literacy council since 2007 and a big thank you goes out to John Bauman for his work in collecting donations at area businesses.
