Speakers: Karen Etter Hale and Vicki Wickliffe discussed the monarch migration to sanctuaries in Mexico. Monarchs migrate 2,000 miles south traveling about 100 miles per day. Monarchs only weigh about 1 gram. They head to the mountains west of Mexico City. Monarchs leave Mexico to head back north in late February. The 3rd generation comes to Wisconsin. Karen and Vicki visited sanctuaries, markets, and other sight seeing attractions.
You can help monarchs by:
planting native milk weeds
planting native perennials
do not use pesticides
donate to monarch projects
purchase monarch friendly avocados.
Indigenous people believe monarchs are the souls of their ancestors. For 2024-2025, the monarchs have increased in population by 30%. A group of monarchs is called a kaleidoscope. They need habitat and food to get back here.
