Happy Bucks and Fines
1. Raina: Witches Night Out was a huge success. Thank you from Legendary Lake Mills!
2. Amy L: Witches Night Out was very fun! Her son really enjoyed Halloween this year.
3. Ken S: His daughter and son in law moved in with him. The interact club is working with the congregational church to help make and sell peanuts this year. The peanuts will be sold at the Legendary Lake Mills Winter Market.
4. Jenn C: Meghann graduated and they were able to take her off base for a vacation and nap. She is waiting around for school to start and is scrubbing floors and sweeping!
5. Tonya: Liliana is also the student rep for the school board. Tonya is helping her Dad build her Son’s house and it looks like it will be done before the cold starts.

  1. You can go to the Lake Mills Rotary Website, login, and share minutes with other people. You can go to “take action” scroll down and see other rotary projects that are going on around the work. You can “refer a potential member”. You can “explore potential leadership programs”. You can go to “events calendar” and see what times the day and evening assemblies are.

Club Business

2. November is Foundation Month. Watch Video
3. 2 at large positions available for next year's Rotary Board starting in June. Ken S and Beth N are stepping down. The at-large board position can be filled by any Rotarian and does not carry specific duties. For someone newer to our club, it's a great way to get your feet wet. It also has been very nice having a veteran member on the board in Ken Stetson. I would welcome another veteran member in his spot. Please let me know of your interest

Today’s Program: Maggie Ginsberg
She has never been to a Rotary meeting. She feels like a lot of this is about public speaking! She said once you publish a book, one of the things that is asked of you is public speaking. She said that she has never been known for public speaking.

Maggie is married to Andy Quandt who owns Gibs Bike Shop, so she feels like she lives in Lake Mills. When they first got married 7 years ago they decided not to pull their kids from their schools. They have yet to move in together. Often people joke that she is just a myth, but she is real and they are married and living happily separately.

She has always written nonfiction for a magazine, but she started brainstorming about characters who live 2 miles apart. She said that it is kind of easy not to live with your spouse! She wondered what would get between a couple who liked their arrangement of living apart. The female character is a recluse character who is simple and lives outside of town. The male character lives in the hustle and bustle of the city and loves it. He also loves how simple his wife is.

One day the female character's lost son shows up on her porch and she decides to hide it from her husband. He is distracted by a friendship he has struck up with a young boy, Charlie. Charlie has a rough home life, and the is taken under his wing.

Because this is a Lake Mills Crowd, she decided to read a text exchange between her and Andy. She shared that Andy is actually a creative writing major. She doesn’t know anything about bicycles, so she was texting him while she was writing between 5:00 and 7:00 am every day. It was a very specific text from Andy about what type of bike Charlie should have. Andy got very into detail about what type of bike Charlie should have. Maggie read a page from the book that sounds a lot like the text exchange. Andy is now taking full credit for writing this page.

There are themes in this book that are very close to her life. She is married in separate homes,

but is not hiding a 40-year-old man in her basement. Her Mom got pregnant at 16 and her baby was taken away at birth. Her Mom didn’t feel like she could hold the baby, so she went in the closet and painted, something she still does to this day. Later in life, Maggie’s sister found her Mom and is now close with the family. There is also alcoholism and addiction in her family life. She said she took real-life situations and made it a little bananas. Her best friend read the book and said she felt like she just read something very private as it felt as though all characters are influenced by her.

Questions and Comments

Greg Renz made a comment that we should all head straight to Daydream Believers Books and Gifts and buy the book. As an author, he typically looks at technicalities, but he was so drawn into the story that he was totally drawn in.
