PROGRAM
Jack C introduced his friend
Paul Milbrath - Sheriff of Jefferson Co for many years
Jefferson co jail last year was about 172 people on average. Due to covid, the number was reduced to around 70 on average due to less sentencing and more monitoring.
One thing that has increased dramatically is the department's use of gloves. The price of gloves has gone up 8x since covid. Masks and sanitizers have also been difficult to supply.
The department is about 15 officers short of what would be considered full staff. They are facing challenges with staff as well, like dispatchers.
Officers are working less in various departments to try to reduce mixing of populations (patrol vs jail for example).
He has pushed for new technology during his time as sheriff, like the use of body cameras. They have reduced vandalism through more park patrolling and the use of a private volunteer group.
The department heads of the Jefferson co level government all work very well together. One collaboration has been to reduce traffic deaths dramatically in the last 10 years.
After covid, Paul invited anyone to ride along with a deputy to learn more about the department and Jefferson co.
The department has been very community minded and as such, has not received the level of backlash that other police departments have faced in the last year.
