Day Meeting Minutes - August 14, 2018

Ann Lee opened the meeting at the Lake Mills EMS building at 12:18pm and led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance followed with the Four-Way Test.

  • Tara W: Son turned 14 and is going to a packer game with her husband and her daughter medaled in tennis
  • Dave R: 3 children having birthdays soon (18, 21, 23) and one was offered a job where he has been interning
  • Steve W: John just got his drivers permit and michael bought a car
  • Mick: Fine in the paper, attended the summer chief conference with Pam S
  • Aaron G: Just got back from vacation and his son is switching to Lake Mills High
  • Pam S: Celebration of life for her aunt harriet who was 100 years old, and shcool board approved going forward with referendum
  • Gerard: Has been busy with vacations and mountain biking (coaching, club).  Had a crash that resulted in 2 broken ribs!
  • Ed H: Auditions for chitty chitty bang bang starting soon

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • over 10k of profit from the cheese chocolate and wine event so far!
  • If we get 2 more new members, we could get a $1500 grant for the 4 recent members to use as they see fit
  • Storage unit secured and mvoed into.  If you have any rotary things, please get them into the unit
  • Bill Gates called (again) reminding our club about the 6 areas of focus for rotary (Peace, fighting disease, clean water and sanitation, saving mothers and children, supporting education, and growing local economies)
  • Paul Harris Fellow Induction - Tara W.

Program

  • Kaitlyn Twesme - Freshman at LMHS spoke about her Wisconsin Space Crystal Mission.
  • She first won a prize for a crystal growing contest, and this led her into a larger program
  • Her team (3 members) created a project to compare the growth of cystals on earth and space
  • They designed the experiment and had it sent to the international space station, where astronauts finished their procedures
  • She has been able to travel all over the country to present the findings: Crystals grown in space are more clear than on earth
  • She has been selected to participate in a 2018/2019 project to test a different method of crystal growing in the same conditions
