- Jenny gave a Happy Buck for her weekend. She had a Birthday party for her grandmother and made a dress with her mom. She mentioned that in the back there are “Mental Help Tips”.
- Raina, Aaron and her parents went to Cleveland over the weekend to explore the city. It was cool to see how much the Rotary Club was displayed and part of the community.
- Janine put in a ton of biking miles in over the weekend. Janine biked on the Glacial Drumlin Trails and hit up the Jefferson Mountain Biking Trail. We are so lucky to have so many bike trails around us in this area.
- Dan the Rotary Visitor mentioned that he gave a talk about his Rotary Club about the upcoming of the Solar Eclipse. He would love to talk to you about this! Please see it if you can, it’s SO COOL.
- Brian said today is the Blood Drive from 12:00pm – 6:00pm. All of the appointments are booked. This Friday is movie night, and hopefully the weather will cooperate. The movie will be Lightyear as it was rained out last time. Please share this on Facebook when you see it.

- August 11 (2nd Friday each month). Rotary Park, 8pm. need 2 volunteers to make popcorn at 6 pm/interact runs concession at 7 pm
- Pre-movie activities by LM Rec Dept.
- Free popcorn for the kids from the concession stand.
- Cash donations or non-perishable food items can be donated and will go to The Mill (food pantry at Lake Mills High School)

Brian Watson asked if Steve could come and give an update on the Lake Mills Police Department. He has been in the law enforcement for 20 years in Watertown, moved to Summit, and then was hired as the Chief of Police in Lake Mills. His wife is also a Police Officer in Watertown, and he has two daughters in High School.
Steve has implemented a program that every use of force by a Lake Mills Police Officer is now reviewed by a trainee.
Steve entered into an agreement for a School Resource Officer. There has always been an “agreement” where Lake Mills Police teaches Dares and works with the kids, but there has never been a formal agreement. There now is which leads to financial contributions from the Lake Mills School District. This is so important as Officer Johnson spends about 90% of her time at the school during the school year.
A large project going on is that there is now new squad and body cameras. This was with the help of the Lake Mills Community Foundation and grant money that Steve was able to find.
The Lake Mills Police are currently working on a “Community Policing Program” (CSO). Community Service Officer (CSO) Program provides an excellent training opportunity for college students considering a future in the law enforcement profession. Community Service Officers provide support services to our sworn staff. This support allows our Police Officers to address more urgent calls for service or problems effecting the quality of life within our community.
The Lake Mills Police Department is working more on community outreach. They have a booth at “Legendary Lake Mills – Witches Night Out” and recently hosted their 4th “Citizens Police Academy Program” which teaches community members what the police does. The “National Night Out Against Crime” was successful in June.
Priorities for the Future of PD:
- There is a need for an Investigator Position in the PD.
- There is a want to expand the CSO Program. He wants to create a pool of those interested in policing who can work on parking infractions and situations such as this. This will help for hiring vacant police spots as well and hopefully will be able to have more local police officers.
How is the LMPD Police Dog, Truman?
He is doing great and earlier this year he got metal on his canine teeth, so he looks AWESOME. He is currently being rehomed with Officer Hanley. The average working – life is 7 to 8 years. So, we have a few years left of work from Truman.
How often to the LMPD have to use force?
Not frequently at all. In fact, the 4th report was just filed, and will be reviewed per what was discussed prior.
