    • Amy Litscher has been a Rotarian for 17 years.
    • Denny Hawkes has been a Rotarian for 58 years. The Rotary Club of Lake Mills began in 1964. Denny joked that he is the oldest Rotarian ever in this club! When Denny came to Lake Mills in April and did not join the club until October. His mentor was actually the owner of the printing company that he ultimately purchased.

Denny shared the history of where the Rotary Club meetings were held, and how they moved around quite a bit. He enjoyed having meetings at Pine Knoll Supper Club, where they remained for a long time. The meetings have always been on Tuesdays at noon. Occasionally at Pine Knoll, they would have a contest to see who could sell the most tickets, the team who sold the most tickets would get a steak lunch and losers would get hot dogs. From time to time there would be evening meetings where wives would be able to join. It was a great time. Women were not always able to join Lake Mills Rotary Club but were able to become members in the Pine Knoll Super Club period.

Most recently they have met at Carps Landing, the Lake Mills Golf Course, the EMS Building, and now we enjoy meeting at Pyramid Event Venue. Some fun memories include taking buses to Milwaukee Brewers Games, and Christmas Parties, and there used to be a tradition where student Rotarians could choose which Rotarians would recite the 4-way test. If it cannot be recited properly, you will have to wear an embarrassing hat during the meeting.

Denny has enjoyed his time at Rotary, and we are so lucky to have him!

Program speaker:
Tonya Olson introduced
Received Dr. of Education from Edgewood college
She has served as principal in Beaver Dam & Belleville, as superintendent in Waupun and is currently the Dist. Administrator in Lake Mills for past 3.5 yrs. Today she will be talking about…

Hannah Kulow, Ava Hockett, Sydney Grundel and discussed WEB. WEB stands for “Where Everyone Belongs”. This is a program that helps 5th graders to feel more comfortable in their new school. This helps with the transition from Elementary School to Middle School.

WEB is a great school program that helps WEB Leaders grow leadership skills and help those they are mentoring to build confidence and self-esteem. Their focus is teamwork, communication, success, and problem-solving.

They host a training day for WEB leaders in which 10-15 kids get together in a group. They play games that help with leadership skills and build confidence in order to best support the incoming students.

At orientation for new students, they welcome them in the decorated gym and then take them on a tour, so they feel comfortable at the school. Each WEB Leader group has a theme in which they all dress up and can be silly throughout the day. Once the tour is done, they play confidence and relationship-boosting games. They help students find their classes, and lockers, and answer any questions they may have. The WEB leaders give tips and tricks on how to be successful in Middle School.
The WEB Leader Role does not end after the initial orientation. They continue to mentor the students throughout the year, meet with them at lunchtime, and work on Service Projects. The WEB Program has been around for 10 to 15 years and continues to be strong and beneficial.
