PROGRAM-RYLA
The Lake Mills Rotary sponsored students from Lakeside Lutheran High School and Lake Mills High School that attended Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) last Saturday at Upham Woods Outdoor Learning Center from 9 am-6 pm.
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is an intensive leadership experience organized by Rotary clubs and districts where young people can develop leadership skills while having fun and making connections.
Lakeside students Ben, Maria, Grace, Cooper were selected to attend RYLA. They reported enjoying the team bonding, learning how to be a community leader. When they first arrived there was an assembly with all members, then they participated in an obstacle course. There was also a team building exercise using PVC pipes to get a ball to the finish line. This involved using problem solving and team building skills. This was a great way to get to know the other attendees.
The Lake Mills High School attendees Avery, Becca, Ava, Sidney, and Cooper were grateful for the opportunity to attend RYLA. They realized the RYLA experience was not like a summer camp (not all circles, rainbows and singing songs). They felt right at home after meeting the members of their teams. The LMHS was proud to be one of 1st groups to finish the obstacle course.
They were surprised for all the amazing food. So much food to feed all those RYLA participants. Food was great!
The RYLA students met many new friends and plan to stay in touch. They also learned how to get involved in the community and how to work together with others.
Attendees participated in problem solving, leadership, ethics, and team building exercises including:
A game called Traffic Jam
An Empathy demonstration.... Everyone starts squatting position with eyes closed. Feel the pain, yet? If you get 1 tap on the shoulder, you could stand up (relieving the pain), 2 taps, you can open your eyes (see the pain others are experiencing), 3rd tap you can tap someone else to relieve their pain (empathize and relieve someone else's pain). This helped the students understand that sometimes you can feel other's pain because you may be going through the same thing, you can be blind to other's pain if you can't see it, and you can help relieve other's pain even.
The RYLA students enjoyed the Ropes course. One big lesson learned was that you don't have to do everything on your own. Ok to ask for help or get support from others.
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) participants are nominated by Rotary clubs. Contact your local Rotary club to find out more about RYLA events in your area & how to apply.
Meeting adjourned 1:00pm
