Presbycusis is Age related hearing loss.  Approximately 1 in 3 people between the age of 65 and 74 have hearing loss. This is the 3rd most common health problem for adults in the U.S. Typically noticed in loud settings, busy restaurant, hearing high pitch voices of grandkids, or asking to repeat, etc. Many people with hearing loss often Mis-hear words  (Windy instead of Wednesday, Thirsty instead of Thursday)
It's windy today, no it's Thursday, so am I let's have a beer. Old deaf men | StareCat.com

How can people use services at UW Speech and Hearing Clinic?

Make an appt.  visit https://csd.wisc.edu/clinic/

No charge for hearing evaluations or consultations or demonstrations.  Do not take insurance.  Does take True hearing.  Bundled fees for other services.

Diagnosis of hearing loss can be done at UW speech and hearing clinic.  What to expect:

  • Review case history--background and medical history
  • Otoscopy - inner ear inspection
  • Conduct a Tympanometry Test- Air pressure test mobility in the ear
  • Hearing Test (beeps and word recognition)

Hearing Technology
Hearing Aids can help treat hearing loss.
There are lots of technological advances
smaller, faster, visually appealing, smarter and
rechargeable.

You can also control things such as volume, TV programs can connect to blue-tooth, accept phone calls or make phone calls--similar to Air-pods via Apps on your phone specific to your hearing aid manufacturers.

Biometrics--help your hearing aids work like an apple watch--can track general activity like daily steps.
Some even have a Fall Detection to help give you and your family peace of mind.  This technology uses velocity and GPS capability and notifies your phone to call selected contacts

You can also use hearing aids with TV program, Netflix,  and Spotify. Streaming accessories are also available such as speaker/microphone to help in busy/loud settings.

Closed Captioning is becoming more available, too.  Even available on streaming services such as Netflix.

UW Speech and Hearing Clinic can also help make recommendations for protection to prevent hearing loss

Hearing aids can help aid in Tinnitus.

To avoid hearing damage (noise induced hearing loss)...
Keep sounds below 80 decibels no limit how long
85 decibels 8 hour limit
90 decibels-4 hour limit
95 decibels-2 hour limit

Check out www.dangerousdecibels.org or visit CDC website https://www.cdc.gov/nceh/hearing_loss/what_noises_cause_hearing_loss.html

Here are some various ways to overcome communication barriers
  • maintain eye contact
  • have your mouth fully visible
  • get their attention before speaking
  • encourage hearing aid usage
  • speak clearly
  • speak in a well lit room
  • give important information in writing
  • be patient
  • in group settings

FDA is allowing for an over the counter option for hearing aids.  Dr. Amy Kroll would compare these to reading glasses.  May help some, but not all.  She recommends getting assessed by a doctor to make sure there is not an underlying medical reason why you are having hearing loss. There is no one size fits all.

Dr. Amy Kroll also recommended seeing a professional to have your ears cleaned rather than do-it-yourself methods you may see on the internet.

Although some hearing aids come with a one time replacement, she agrees that adding hearing aids on to your Home Owner's Insurance policy for replacement (in case your dog eats them) may also be a good idea.
