PROGRAM
Shawna - Court interpreter for Jefferson co circuit court
She is a spanish language interpreter. Their task is to translate what they hear to another person without changes or omissions. Many people are proficient in english, but not to the degree to understand legal or medical intricacies.
Licensed interpreters have a code of ethics that everything is confidential; something that is not shared by people "filling in" this role who might be bilingual.
She has to have extensive vocabulary in fields which she has had no direct experience
3 Types of Interpretation:
1. Sight Translation - See the words in english, say the words in spanish
2. Simultaneous Translation - both the native speaker and the interpreter speak at the same time
3. Consecutive Translation - The interpreter speaks after the native speaker is done
When hiring an interpreter, make sure they have: certification, training and credentials, and know a code of ethics.
Meeting adjourned 1:00pm
