PROGRAM
Representatives from the Downtown Madison Rotary Club spoke about their international project.  They are addressing the problem of adolescent and school age girls in Ghana not staying in school due to challenges in menstrual hygiene.  They are educating girls, boys, and parents around the issue, providing menstrual hygiene kits, and instruction on how to create new ones.  They utilize local Rotary groups and interact groups to deliver the support to the students.  They are looking for partnership for this project, $1000 per club.  $10 buys one kit.  A site visit is also being planned.  For more information, Scott or Jenn can email you a flier.

Meeting adjourned 1:10pm

BIO - Peter Zambo

My name is Peter Zambo and I am a senior at Lakeside Lutheran. My parents are Steve and Beth Zambo. I have lived in Lake Mills my whole life. I have two older brothers, Ben and Nathan, and two older sisters, Jessica and Ashley, all Lakeside graduates. I enjoy spending time with my two nephews and two nieces.  My family and I attend St. John Lutheran Church in Newville.
I enjoy all Frisbee®-related activities, especially ultimate Frisbee® and disc golf, and I also enjoy playing the piano. My favorite subjects in school are the maths and sciences. I started my own online business, making and selling giant Jenga® sets. While at Lakeside, I participated in soccer and track, but my sports career ended with knee tendonitis, so I became the manager for both girls and boys soccer teams my junior year. I am a member of the STEM Club, National Honor Society, and a four-year member of the Math Team. This past summer, I was one of Lakeside’s representatives to Badger Boys State, where I learned about the inner workings of our government.
For as long as I can remember, I have joined in on disaster relief trips for WELS Christian Aid and Relief. The first trip I went on was to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Since then, I have been to Moore, Oklahoma; Joplin, Missouri; Huntsville, Alabama; Wautoma, Wisconsin; and New York City for Hurricane Sandy clean-up. Several weeks ago, I helped remove trees and branches in Brownsville, Wisconsin, after tornados came through the area. I also spend a lot of time volunteering at Salty Earth Pictures, a movie studio in Fort Atkinson that creates faith-based films. I have built sets, acted, and helped with craft services.
After high school, I plan to attend Wisconsin Lutheran College and enter its new engineering program. I love to work with my hands, whether as a carpenter or an electrician, and have already gutted my own bathroom and put it back together. I also enjoy fixing watches, clocks, sewing machines, vacuum sweepers and tuning pianos.
I thank God for the invaluable learning experiences from my parents and many of the people in Lake Mills who taught and coached me over the years. Being selected student rotarian is a tremendous honor and a great blessing.

BIO - Gavin Lira

Hello, my name is Gavin Lira.  I live in Lake Mills with my parents, Martin and Linda, and my older brother, Grant.  Grant is a sophomore at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and he is also a member of the Wisconsin Army National Guard.  Both sets of my grandparents also live in Lake Mills, so I am blessed to be surrounded by family.  My hobbies include sports of all kinds.  I enjoy playing football and basketball, playing golf with my dad, and spending time on the lake.  In addition, I find staying fit to be very important and I weight train and do cardio on a regular basis.  Some of my interests include studying history and politics.  Recently I have become very interested in a career in Business, and I have developed several business websites.  Above all, I enjoy helping others, and I hope to one day combine this passion with my other interests to make a positive difference.
My school extra-curricular activities include:  Football (9-12), Basketball (9-11), Track (9), Spanish Club (9-10), Show Choir (9-10), Solo Ensemble (9), Link Crew (11-12), National Honor Society (11-12), Iron Club (9-10),  WILS Leadership Seminar (10), Badger Boys State (11), Wisconsin Business World (11), Homecoming Court (10), Prom Court (11).  My extra-curricular activities have not only been enjoyable, yet they have also taught me the value of working together as a team to accomplish great things.
My community service and volunteer work include:  Coaching and assisting at various youth sport camps every year, National Honor Society Blood Drive, National Honor Society Adopt-a- Family, Link Crew Culver’s Fundraiser, painting the weight room at the high school, prom set-up, and working at the elementary school carnival.  My community service and volunteer work has been an ideal way to give back to the town I love.
I also am actively involved in serving my church, St. Gabriel.  My church activities include:  Altar serving (5th grade thru present), helping at our yearly parish festivals, participating in food drives for our local food pantry, baking pies for our food pantry for Thanksgiving, making Easter baskets for our food pantry, preparing food for our parish graduation breakfast, making care packages for our parish college students, making care packages for those deployed in our military, shoveling snow and raking leaves for the elderly, working at the Fall Festival, and assisting at various dinners and events our parish hosts.  I enjoy helping my parish and serving God.
After graduating from high school, I plan on attending a 4-year University.  I am interested in pursuing a degree in Business and I am also interested in the entrepreneurial aspect of the business world.  I am currently touring many Universities within the UW System.  Some of the UW Universities I am interested in include:  UW-Madison, UW-Whitewater, and UW-Lacrosse.
I would be honored to become a Student Rotarian for many reasons.  First, I would love to build relationships with the bright business leaders in our community and learn from their experience and their guidance.  Second, I look forward to the monthly Rotary Luncheons and the opportunity to hear and learn from the guest speakers.  Third, I have great respect for the work the Rotary Club does in Lake Mills, and I want to learn more about this work and how I can become actively involved.  Last, becoming a Student Rotarian will aid in directing my future towards a path where I am able to give back to my community, help those in need, and make a difference in any small way I am able.

BIO - Ellie Laws

Hello, my name is Ellie Laws. I am the daughter of Dru and Jessica Laws. I have two younger brothers and one younger sister: Jaren who is a sophomore, Kaden who is in 6th grade, and Grace who is in 3rd grade. My family means a lot to me, and I’m not sure where I’d be without the support and help of my parents. Besides spending time with my family and friends, I love to perform and find ways to be involved with different kinds of people. Being outgoing has helped me to be involved with many types of people, groups, and clubs that are available at our high school and even beyond that.

I also enjoy helping the school and community through service projects. I have been involved in many projects, but some of my favorites have been caroling and singing for the tree lighting ceremony during Christmas time, planning and putting together and leading a church camp, helping to deliver presents to a family in need for NHS (secret santa), being involved in church choir, helping with multiple highway clean-ups, working at the Lake Mills Music Parents Concession stand, planning and organizing a leadership conference, and helping at a Red Cross Blood Drive by donating blood and working before, during, and after the blood drive.

My plans after high school are to attend a four-year university and study Early Education and/or Special Education. I have wanted to be a teacher since I was in elementary school. Having a brother with special needs has inspired me to go into Special Education specifically. Although I am unsure about where exactly I would like to attend college, I will be applying to BYU-Idaho, BYU, Utah State, and UW-La Crosse. I am very excited to get into a classroom and start teaching while having an impact on children just as teachers in my life have had an extreme impact on me.

The reason I would love to be a Student Rotarian is because I love everything it stands for. Being involved in this would allow me to be able to improve my leadership skills. Going into the education field having these leadership skills and learning about different groups of people allows me to grow as an individual. Lastly, being a Student Rotarian would let me give back to the community that has been there supporting what I do throughout high school.
